The National Judicial Council (NJC) has taken disciplinary actions against some Nigerian judges. Two judges, Justice G.C. Aguma of the Rivers State High Court and Justice A.O. Nwabunike of the Anambra State High Court, have been suspended for one year without pay due to misconduct .
Justice Aguma was found guilty of aiding a litigant in a questionable garnishee proceeding, while Justice Nwabunike violated judicial ethics by granting ex parte orders without proper filings . Additionally, both judges have been placed on a "Watch-List" for two years after their suspension .
Furthermore, two Heads of Court, Chief Judge T.E. Chukwuemeka Chikeka of Imo State and Grand Kadi Babagana Mahdi of Yobe State, have been recommended for compulsory retirement due to age falsification. Justice Chikeka had two conflicting dates of birth, while Justice Mahdi presented three inconsistent dates, indicating that he should have retired 12 years ago . Both judges have been directed to refund salaries received during their extended tenure .
The NJC has also cautioned two other judicial officers, including Justice I.A. Jamil of Kogi State, for lapses in handling sensitive cases . The Council emphasized its duty to protect judges from baseless allegations while maintaining accountability .
