Assembly suspends LG chairmen, deputies over financial records

The Edo State Assembly has taken a bold step by suspending all 18 council chairmen and their deputies for two months due to misconduct. This decision came after Governor Monday Okpebholo wrote a petition to the House, accusing the chairmen of refusing to submit their financial records to the state government, which he deemed as insubordination and gross misconduct .

The suspension was made possible by a motion moved by Mr. Isibor Adeh and seconded by Mr. Donald Okogbe, which was supported by 14 members, opposed by six, and abstained by three. During the suspension period, the leaders of the legislative arms of the respective councils will take over leadership.

It's worth noting that the debate on the matter sparked some drama, with the Chief Whip, Prince Yekini Idaiye, questioning the need for further debate since an earlier executive session had already agreed on the suspension. Nevertheless, the Assembly's resolution grants the legislative leaders temporary oversight until the suspension period elapses
