Moroccan Court Overturns Deportation of Uyghur Man Wanted by China

In a significant legal decision, a Moroccan court has overturned the deportation order of Yidiresi Aishan, a member of China's Uyghur Muslim minority, who was sought by Beijing on allegations of terrorism. Detained in Morocco since 2021, Aishan was arrested upon arrival in Casablanca from Turkiye under an Interpol warrant, which was subsequently rescinded.

Despite the initial agreement to extradite him to China, the Rabat court ruled in favor of his release, annulling the deportation order. Aishan, a father of three in his thirties, has since left Morocco, though further details remain undisclosed. This case has drawn international attention, with United Nations human rights experts previously urging Morocco to halt the extradition, citing credible risks of severe human rights violations upon his return to China. The Chinese government has accused Aishan of involvement in terrorist activities in 2017, charges he has consistently denied. The situation of the Uyghur minority in China has been a subject of global concern, with allegations of mass detentions and human rights abuses in the Xinjiang region.
