Nigerian Police Confirm Fresh Terrorist Attack in Benue Community, Report Two Deaths

The Nigeria Police Force, Benue State Command, has confirmed a recent attack in the Jato Aka Turan community, located in the Kwande Local Government Area. The assault, carried out by armed herdsmen, resulted in the deaths of two individuals, as stated by the Command's Public Relations Officer, SP Anene Sewuese Catherine.

Contrary to the official report, local National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members claim that the attack, which spanned from Sunday to Tuesday, led to at least 20 fatalities and numerous injuries. They describe the community as being in a state of chaos and tension.

The Jato Aka Turan community, situated near a Nigerian Army base, has been identified as particularly vulnerable. Residents report frequent sightings of over 20 motorcycles carrying armed men and ammunition passing through the area in broad daylight.

Despite these reports, SP Anene assured that normalcy has been restored. She noted that no arrests have been made, as security forces are primarily focused on direct engagements with the attackers, whom she referred to as bandits.

The police spokesperson emphasized that the situation is under control and that a state delegation has been dispatched to the area. While acknowledging injuries, she did not provide specific numbers. Residents, however, continue to express fear and uncertainty, with many fleeing the community to seek safety.

This incident highlights the ongoing security challenges in Benue State, where communities have repeatedly suffered attacks from armed groups. The disparity between official reports and local accounts underscores the need for comprehensive security measures and transparent reporting to address the concerns of affected residents.
