The death toll from recent attacks in Plateau State's Bokkos Local Government Area has risen to 52, following the discovery of 40 additional bodies during search and rescue operations conducted on Wednesday and Thursday night. Authorities and community leaders confirmed that mass burials were held on Thursday, including for 31 victims in a single ceremony. Among the deceased were five children who were reportedly burned to death in Hurti village. Additional fatalities include 11 in Ruwi, four in Manguna, and one in Daffo village.
The Bokkos Cultural Development Council (BCDC) Vanguard, through its Chairman Farmasum Fuddang, stated that the search for missing persons continues, particularly in the Hurti and Mbar communities. The council has urged residents to remain vigilant as search and rescue operations intensify.
In response to the attacks, the Plateau State Government condemned the violence and appealed for calm. Commissioner for Information and Communication, Joyce Ramnap, expressed concern over the resurgence of violence, describing it as a serious setback to recent efforts to restore peace and stability in the area. Ramnap stated that security agencies have been deployed to ensure normalcy returns as soon as possible and that important arrests have been made, which may help in stemming the tide of this situation.
Residents are encouraged to remain law-abiding, cooperate with security forces, and report any suspicious activities through official channels as efforts to restore peace continue.
