Finnish Court Sets June 2025 Trial Date for Biafran Activist Simon Ekpa

A Finnish court has scheduled June 2025 for the trial of Simon Ekpa, a pro-Biafran activist facing terrorism-related charges. Ekpa, who was arrested in Finland alongside four others, is accused of inciting violence and financing terrorism through social media platforms.

Ekpa, the self-proclaimed Prime Minister of the Biafra Republic Government-in-Exile, was remanded by the Päijät-Häme District Court on charges of public incitement to commit crimes with terrorist intent. His new lawyer, Kaarle Gummerus, confirmed receipt of the pre-trial file and is preparing a defense.

In December 2024, the Nigerian government submitted extradition documents to Finland, seeking Ekpa's return to face charges related to violence in Nigeria's South-East region. General Christopher Musa, Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, expressed confidence in the legal proceedings, stating that the necessary documentation had been provided.

The case remains under investigation, with the possibility of re-evaluation hearings occurring no earlier than two weeks from the last hearing, should either party request it.
