A devastating wave of attacks by suspected herdsmen has led to the occupation of over 44 farm settlements, known as 'Ndiagu,' in Eha-Amufu, Isi-Uzo Local Government Area of Enugu State. Residents have been forced to flee their homes, seeking refuge in neighboring communities. The affected areas include Abor Ishala, Mgbuji, Agu-Amede, Eha-Agu, and Umuhu.
The most recent and heavily populated settlement to be attacked was Ndiagu Amofia village in Umuhu Eha-Amufu autonomous community on February 28. In Abor, at least nine farm settlements have been overtaken by militias who have displaced residents and occupied their homes with their families.
These relentless attacks have left a trail of destruction and displacement, with communities such as Mgbuji, Agu-Amede, and Eha-Agu experiencing similar invasions. Despite the severity of the situation, there has been a noticeable silence from government authorities, leaving the affected residents without adequate support or intervention.
Community leaders and residents have expressed their frustration and despair over the lack of governmental response. Many have been forced to abandon their ancestral homes and farmlands, seeking safety in Enugu metropolis or with relatives in other communities. The absence of security forces and relief efforts has exacerbated the humanitarian crisis in the region.
The ongoing occupation of these settlements by suspected herdsmen poses a significant threat to the livelihoods and cultural heritage of the indigenous populations. Urgent action is required from both state and federal governments to address the security challenges and provide necessary assistance to the displaced residents of Eha-Amufu.
